How do I burn candles safely?
First Lighting: On the first burn, let the wax melt-pool reach the container edge. Candle wax has a “memory” and will know where to go next time. This initial burn will make it easier for the candle to follow that pattern during all subsequent burns. If you blow it out and it’s only melted half the diameter, you can end up with tunnels (see our journal entry re: tunnel repair!). Rule of thumb: Burn one hour for every inch of your candle's diameter.
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish all candles when you leave a room or before going to sleep. We recommend burning for a maximum of 4 hours each time you enjoy your candle. Exceeding 4 hours could cause safety issues.
Follow the 2-foot rule. Don't place a burning candle within 2 feet of clothing, books, curtains, or other flammable objects.
Keep lit candles away from drafts, ceiling fans, and any air currents. This keeps the flame burning steadily in the center of the candle.
Trim the wick to ¼” before every burn. This helps prevent the flame from getting too large, and also cuts down on any excess soot or black smoke.
Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
Candles should always be placed on a heat-resistant surface. Left on untreated woods, could result in burn marks.
Always read and follow the manufacturers' directions for use and safety, and extinguish a candle if the flame gets too close to the candle holder or container.
When burning multiple candles at once, always place them at least 3 inches apart from each other.
